Over two dozen soldiers killed and many more injured in a recent ambush attack in Mozambique.
“The terrorists let the military cars into an area of dense forest and then opened fire with heavy weapons… causing huge casualties in our forces,” a senior military official told AFP on Thursday in the capital Maputo.
“We had 25 men killed and dozens more injured,” he said, adding that the attackers retreated back into the forest after the assault.
The Islamic State group has been pushing to take control of the region since 2017, launching several vicious attacks on soldiers and civilians alike.
Islamic State militants have reportedly taken control of large sections of land which the local army have thus far failed to reclaim.
