The Trump administration has notified congress of its intention to sell advanced weapons to Taiwan, amid circumstances of escalating tension between Taiwan and China .

The two countries have had bad blood between them for decades, but recent events involving Chinese army (PLA) aircraft repeatedly breaching the median line of the Taiwan strait indicate that armed conflict may be imminent.

Trumps decision to sell weapons to Taiwan will likely inflame the situation, however it remains in line with the obligations of the US under the Taiwan Relations Act:

“the United States will make available to Taiwan such defense articles and defense services in such quantity as may be necessary to enable Taiwan to maintain a sufficient self-defense capabilities”
