Donald and Melania Trump Test Positive For COVID-19

Just minutes ago, Donald Trump confirmed via Tweet that he and the first lady, Melania Trump, both tested positive for the novel COVID-19. The tweet came roughly two hours after a prior tweet which said:

“Hope Hicks, who has been working so hard without even taking a small break, has just tested positive for Covid 19. Terrible! The First Lady and I are waiting for our test results. In the meantime, we will begin our quarantine process!”

Hope Hicks is an American PR consultant who became a counselor to the President Donald Trump in February of this year.

Now, the President released a tweet stating:

“Tonight, @FLOTUS and I tested positive for COVID-19. We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!”

The announcement spurred several hashtags on twitter, including ‘#HOAX,’ ‘#TrumpHasCOVID19’ and ‘DonaldTrump,’ along with the phrase ‘There is a God’ emerging from the President’s detractors.

Additionally, the Washington Post released an Op-ed less than an hour after Trump’s announcement, entitled “Opinion: Imagine what it will be like to never have to think about Trump again.”

Trump’s COVID-19 diagnosis could present large issues for the upcoming election, given that the U.S. President is 74 years old, with 70% of COVID-19 deaths occuring among those aged 70+.

Moreover, with just two weeks until the second Presidential Debate, it remains unclear as to how Trump and the First Lady will handle the virus.
